My good friend Cari sent me this and I can’t resist the game. It started with the A Very Good Taste blog posting.  Bloggers around to the world are challenged to do the following:

1) Copy the list below into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

Here’s what I’ve eaten from the VGT Omnivore’s Hundred list–I will eat just about anything except meats made from organs:

Alert! CosmicRhino recipe takes first place! September 4, 2008

Filed under: Miscellaneous Stuff — Gina @ 5:30 pm

Yes, it’s true. Last weekend, my healthy zucchini bread recipe won first place at the Kittitas County Fair, in Ellensburg, Washington. Well, it’s not really my recipe, it’s my sister Jill’s, but I’ll take credit for getting the recipe out to all four of my blog readers (you know who you are!). Anyhoo, I got the word from CosmicRhino mom, Jere (reader #1), so hopefully Jill can post a comment here and give us the real scoop.

PBS’s Superb Cooking Shows February 17, 2008

The CosmicRhino household is proudly cable-free but imagine my surprise when we got our new television and started received new channels that are broadcast in HD! One of my favorites is CreateTV (www.createtv.com) which is on one of LA’s public television stations, KLCS.

America’s Test Kitchen - it’s like science meets kitchen! These guys also do one of my favorite cooking magazine’s, Cook’s Illustrated. If you like to cook, you’ll get hooked on both the show and the magazine.

BBQ Tempeh Sandwiches February 1, 2008

TempehIt’s a miracle of miracles. Little sister Jo is really truly learning to cook and big sister Gina (me) is very proud. She dazzled me with this a couple of weeks ago and it’s truly scrumptuous. What exactly is tempeh, you ask? Well, I had to look it up myself.

Tempeh is a fermented soybean cake with a mild, nutty flavor and texture similar to that of soft tofu. It’s a great meat substitute and a very good source of fiber. Look for tempeh in the refrigerator case in the health-food section of large supermarkets. Now I will be honest with you–I’ve tried tempeh a few times and it always tasted like cardboard to me. But not this recipe. It’s delicious even if you’re a carnivorous type. This recipe is brought to you by Food and Wine.

I love BeachGreens! January 25, 2008

Filed under: Miscellaneous Stuff — Gina @ 7:24 pm

For those of you who, like me, can’t get to the Farmer’s Market as much as you’d like, have I got the perfect solution for you…BeachGreens here in Long Beach, California.

BeachGreens is a relatively new company that buys organic produce from local farmers and delivers it to your doorstep. It’s fantastic! I have it come right to my office on Thursdays where I duly divvy up the goodies with my girl Cari of holarubia fame (we’re splitting it each week).

I think the best part is that it motivates me to make sure I do get plenty of fruits and vegetables, which is quite consistent with the goals and objectives of CosmicRhino.

Very Quick Whole Wheat Brown Bread February 13, 2007

Filed under: Miscellaneous Stuff — Gina @ 5:36 pm

I’m so excited! I just restored a computer back-up from 2004 and I found one of my favorite recipes from Jill’s kitchen. It’s delicious, especially toasted with a little honey!

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup flax seed
  • ¾ cup canola oil, plus more for pans
  • 4 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • ¾ cup blackstrap molasses
  • 2/3 cup toasted wheat germ
